despite作介詞有“不管”、“不在乎”、“雖有”的意思，作名詞有“侮辱”、“憎恨”、“輕蔑的拒絕或不承認(rèn)”的意思。despite用作介詞時，與in spite of同義，都表示“盡管”、“雖然”、“不顧”之意，放在句首時，要接具體的成分。

1.despite表示盡管；雖然

(1)Despite a thorough investigation,no trace of Dr Southwell has been found...盡管進行了徹底的調(diào)查，還是沒有發(fā)現(xiàn)索思韋爾博士的任何蹤跡。

(2)The National Health Service has visibly deteriorated,despite increased spending...盡管支出在增加，但國民醫(yī)療保健服務(wù)的質(zhì)量卻明顯下降了。

(3)He was obviously distressed despite being unconscious.雖然他自己未發(fā)覺，但他顯然很憂心。

(4)She persevered in her idea despite obvious objections raised by friends.雖然朋友們明確反對，她還是堅持己見。

(5)Despite his bulk he moved lightly on his feet.盡管他身形龐大，移動起來還是很靈巧。

(6)They were all in top hats and cutaways despite the growing heat.雖然天氣越來越熱，他們?nèi)匀看髦唔敹Y帽，穿著燕尾服。

2.despite表示不由自主；情不自禁

Despite myself,Harry's remarks had caused me to stop and reflect.哈里的話讓我不由自主地停下來細(xì)想。

1.despite of不管，盡管，任憑

Despite of their unproductive work,they mostly make good money.

盡管他們的非生產(chǎn)性工作，他們大多是好錢。

2.despite that+句子，其中that是作為賓語從句的先行詞來用的，后面的句子是賓語從句。

3.despite the fact that+句子，表示的意思是：盡管。

4.in spite of

(1)in spite of +賓語 作讓步狀語，表示“不顧”，“盡管”，“雖然”之意。

(2)in spite of the fact that xxx (從句)做”不顧XXX事實”講。
